Hickory Flooring

This open grain, somewhat rough-textured, wood has strongly contrasting grain patterns giving it a somewhat unique appearance in the finished floor. It is the toughest of all the American hardwoods and is therefore somewhat harder to install and sand, with a tendency to splitting in the tongue when nailing. Its stability is satisfactory, although a bit less stable than Red Oak. It does not take stain readily, but with its strong natural coloration, staining is not an issue. Hickory is readily available in Northern forests. It is installed, primarily, in rustic residential settings.
